Weekend Wrap-Up
I did my grocery shopping last night at Kroger and wound up with a good deal or two. According to the end of my receipt I saved 33%. The breakdown of the savings are as follows:
MFG Coupon Savings - 18.52 Bonus Coupons - 0.30 Kroger Plus Savings - 36.80 For a total of 55.62 I spent 117.52 out of pocket.
However, I did earn a $0.10/gallon reward and I was getting low on gas...and then my stock pile in the freezer was getting low.
Here are the deals I got...
Buy 2 things of Quaker instant oatmeal get $1.00 off - So they were on sale for 2 for $4. I also had a MFG coupon for $1 off 2. So all said and done it cost me $2 for 2 boxes. Not bad for name brand oatmeal.
I had 2 buy one get one free Welch's Aqua Juice coupons *couponbug.com* & they were on-sale for $2.79 with your Kroger card (regularly $3.99) so I got 4 large bottles of juice for $1.40 a bottle.
They also had the California Pizza Kitchen frozen pizzas on sale for $5.49 with your Kroger card (which is cheaper than Wal-mart). We LOVE the white pizza with the spinach. Great for Friday's during Lent.
Now onto Sunday's shopping spree....I hit both Walgreens and CVS up. I had a few coupons that were about to expire so I went ahead and used them even though the items weren't on sale...but it is stuff we use. Here is the breakdown....
Walgreens:
Purchased the following:
-2 Hot Wheel Cars (Easter Basket for PMck) buy one get one free - 2 for $1.29
-3 boxes of 20 ft Reynolds Foil Wrap (we were out) - $0.89/box
-4 Crest Pro-Health Toothpaste (Found on clearance and then when you purchase 4 you get a $5 rebate this month through the Easy Saver Rebate program) - used a 0.75 off one coupon, and 2 $1 off coupons - marked down for $0.94/box - cost 3.76 less 2.75 coupons - OOP cost 1.01 and will get $5.50 back in rebates.
-2 cans of Fushion shaving cream (hubby's favorite) at 4.29/can - less 2 $1 off coupons
-1 pack of night light light bulbs for PMck's room
-1 One A Day vitamin drink mix for 1.49 (free after Easy Saver Rebate)
Total 17.03 less 6 Register Rewards - 11.03 OOP
Savings: Walgreens Coupons 3.39 Walgreens Advertised Savings 11.40 MFG coupons 10.75 Total Savings 25.54 (33%)
CVS:
-3 12 packs of coke zero (for a party this afternoon) - 3/$11
-1 Glade Plug In Scented Oil - $5.99 (Regularly $9.99) less $3 MFG coupon - $2.99 earned $1
ECB plus there was a $3 MFG coupon inside the Glade Plug In Box.
-1 CVS 16 oz Hydrogen Peroxide on sale for $0.50
-1 CVS 16 oz Rubbing Alcohol on sale for $0.50
-4 Old Spice deodorant on sale 2/$5 less 2 $1 off 2 coupons - so 4 for $8
So Total OOP 16.37. I used $7.99 in ECBs and $7 in MFG coupons. Total savings $28.33.
All and all not too bad.
With the Walgreens Easy Saver Rebate, you can enter your purchases online and elect to have your rebate money on a Walgreens giftcard and they will give you 10% more of your rebate money (so if you are turning in purchases to get a $5 rebate they will put $5.50 on the gift card) and each month they run these rebates so the next month enter your giftcard number and they will load it directly on the card. So just another way to make a few extra bucks.

Things I have learned so far....
....that it is work, but is super manageable. If you read the blogs of some of the moms who have done the research daily and learn to read the forums on sites such as slickdeals or A Full Cup, where they somehow get their hands on sale ads weeks in advance, you can learn how to obtain large amounts of coupons for the things that are on sale and stock pile without a whole lot of work. Oh and one other thing, you can't be brand loyal!
Here are a few things that I have been successful in obtaining quite cheaply!
1. I purchased 20 coupons on ebay for $2 off 2 Ritz Crackers, Wheat Thins, or Triscuits for $4. Now CVS ran a special for the smaller boxes 5 for $5 which included Ritz Crackers and Wheat Thins. So I ended up with a variety of 20 boxes of Ritz Crackers and Wheat Thins for only $4. I love Wheat Thins and so does PMcK. I use the Ritz Crackers to top some of my yummy casseroles. It is a win win!
2. I purchased 20 coupons on Ebay for $1 off any Garnier Fructise style products for $2.75. Walgreens had these on sale for $2.99 one week. Along with the Walgreens Easy Saver Coupon for the month of March ($2 off any Garnier Fructise shampoo, conditioner, or styler), I was able to score a lot of shampoo, mousse, and hair spray free! (At Walgreens you can use a manufacture coupon with the Easy Saver Coupon (considered a Walgreens store coupon) together...shampoo cost $2.99 - $2 ESC - $1 Manufacture Coupon = Free!).
3. At Kroger (my favorite grocery store) they double coupons up to $0.55 value every day! They also have the four roll (single not double) Cottonelle toliet paper for $0.99 everyday. So every month I go and print fromt he Cottonelle website $0.50 off one roll coupons and use to get my free high quality soft toliet paper. ($0.99 - $1 (double coupon) = FREE!) Note the coupon resets each month. I usually go on the first of the month, print off one coupon, hit the back button and print one more. Usually you are only allowed to print two. Also look for these coupons on the coupon links to the right or in the Sunday newspaper.
4. At CVS they had a deal that if you purchased Colgate Toothpaste for $2.49 then you received $2.49 in Extra Care Bucks to use on your next CVS purchase (these can be used just like a gift card would be). Well I had a $0.75 coupon for Colgate...so I made $0.75 on the deal (toothpaste $2.49 - $0.75 coupon = $1.76 out of pocket then received Extra Care Buck for $2.49 to use on next visit).
Here are a few other pointers I have learned:
- Target has their own grocery coupons that can be 'stacked' with a manufacture coupon. For instance, one week they had Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice (64 oz bottles) for $1.99. That week Target had a coupon for $1 off. I went to the Ocean Spray Cranberry website and printed off a $1 off manufacture coupon. I was able to score 6 bottles of juice for Free! Last week they had Silk Soy Milk on sale for $2.49/half gallon. They also had a target coupon for $0.50 off. By using the coupon I scored name brand soy milk for $2 a half gallon (which any mom with a kid who is a soy drinker knows that is a good deal).
- Kroger - You can load e-coupons onto your card and stack these with 'paper' coupons. I have been able to score some cheap pull-ups this way (less than $6 a pack). You need to register your Kroger card on the Kroger website. Also check out shortcuts.com and cellfire.com to obtain your e-coupons.
Meat and Diary - I have learned that stores are required to review their meat and dairy daily for expired items. I have also learned it is Kroger's policy to mark down anything within 4 days of expiration. Most stores do this around the same time every day. My local store does this around 10 a.m. on Saturdays....so that is when I try to shop to stock up on some cheap meat. I have had a discussion with the butcher and he said there is nothing wrong with the meat they just don't want to take a chance of spoilage...they would much rather sell it cheaper and get some money opposed to not getting anything at all. He said that as long as I use the meat by the expiration or freeze it by the expiration date then I was fine. He said it was good for about 6 months frozen. I have scored PMcK some yummy yogurt drinks for $0.25 a six pack because they were expiring in 5 days....so guess what PMcK drank for the next 5 days! It was just as good for him as milk and he loves it...so I saved some money that week on my dairy purchases.
I suggest you read up on your grocery store's coupon and price mistake policy is. Kroger has a policy that if the item rings up the wrong price, you point it out, and the item cost less than $5 you get it for free! I have scored some free biscuits this way!

I have come to realize that I can purchase name brand foods cheaper than the store brands, I can feed my family tasty and healthy meals, all without having to break the bank. I have also been able to stockpile enough of some items that I have passed on some to those who I know may need a little help.
So join me on my journey. In the future I will post pics of my great deal and post the breakdown of how I did it. Tomorrow I am going to Walgreens to score me some free Excedrin!

Welcome to Torres Money Saver....
In January 2009, I made a resolve to change the way our household was spending money. Let's face it folks, times are tough. We love our lifestyle...not extravagant by any means, but comfortable.
In 2006 we were blessed with our first child, PMcK, who by the grace of God the Almighty above, was chosen for us through the spirit of adoption. Now let's fast forward almost three years. We have decided that PMcK needs a little brother or sister. We have decided that unlike the first route we took, we don't want to extend ourselves financially the way we did before. So we have decided, like many Americans, to dig ourselves out of the little hole we are in and start building the fund we will call "PMck's Little Bro or Sis Fund".
I have been blessed to have met a friend who is such an inspiration to me as a wonderful Christian mom, wife, and woman through PMck's friend at school WesMan. After following her story of breaking the chains of debt, I too got inspired. Daddy M and I want nothing more than for PMcK to have a little brother or sister, but we also don't want to over extend ourselves either. So after watching and reading in utter disbelief at how EM and other mom's were finding ways to cut cost, I jumped on the band wagon.
So this January, EM agreed to school a few of us in the world of CVS and couponing. We all met at our local Chik-Fil-A and the rest is history for me. This is my new found hobby which Daddy M does not mind at all because it isn't costing him money it is making him money! LOL! I am now stock piling (and will never again pay money for shampoo, razors, toothpaste, or basic medicines (advil, tylenol, excedrin, etc.), or high quality toliet paper (yes the really soft stuff)). I have learned to fill my deep freeze, cook crock pot meals that make enough to freeze and have for easy suppers, and so much more.
So follow me on my quest to squish the little bit of credit card debt and start building that "PMcK Little Bro or Sis Fund"!
